Chapter 2/3 Reflection

The first page of chapter two, states the chapters learning goal which is "to explore how teachers and students can use computer technologies to transform education in schools" If we analyze this statement closely it clearly states that its on both the teacher and student. In the past education has always been revolved around the teacher, but from my readings from chapter 2 and 3 it is clear that the use of technology opens opportunities for education to have more focus on the student.Of the five ways technology transforms classrooms, the one that I thought to be the most interesting was on the Information literacy and Internet Literacy. The example the reading provided was about how researchers made a false website about an animal called the pacific Northwest Tree Octopus. The students in this research had such a lack of knowledge about information and internet literacy that they actually believed the false information they read.It is very important that schools start teaching students how to understand information presented online.

Chapter 3 focused on developing lessons with technology. Like mentioned in the chapter veteran teachers have developed the skill to come up with lessons effortlessly but for younger teachers it seems very beneficial to use the computer and internet sources to help enhance lessons. There are now so many lesson templates and other website links that are online and easy access to teachers.

Focus Question.
1. From the readings, we know that computer technology is well suited to support the student-centered teaching approach. Do you think its possible for technology to support a teacher centered classroom environment?

2. Will online lesson help, interfere with a teachers creativity?

  1. I believe the computer technology will be useful in Student-centered methodologies. It can help student to more engage in their learning. However student in Teacher-centered lesson could be passive rather than active because “convey information” is a key element in Teacher-centered method. In teacher-centered lesson, teachers should find the most efficient and effective “convey” way so that their student will learn the “information”. Unexpectedly, it might be easier for the teacher to teach using technology in teacher-centered lesson because there are so many educational materials and program in the internet. The teacher just presents the materials by clicking a button. Therefore, it is necessary for the teachers who try to incorporate technology into their classroom to develop the lesson plan concretely before the lesson.

  2. 1. I 100% believe that technology can support a teacher centered classroom environment to better the lessons. I believe this is how and the only way it should be. Technology should never replace the teacher in a classroom.

    2. I believe that there are very selective lessons that this can work for. It most definitely should not be something that is implemented all the time but maybe a hint here or there. If online lessons are presented too often then they can have a negative effect.

  3. In response to question one, I think technology can be used in a teacher-centered classroom so long as the students get some opportunity to be creative with their projects. Teacher-centered classrooms and creativity among students do not need to be mutually exclusive categories.

  4. Since technology have changed our life, we cannot live without it! The transformation in education not only happened on teachers but students as well. I also found information literacy and Internet literacy very impressing. Internet and any other technologies gave us an explosion of information. Thus I do believe that It is very important that schools start teaching students how to identify information appropriately and efficiently.

  5. responding to your second question i believe online lesson help does not interfere with a teacher creativity. i believe it actually can enhance a teachers creativity. teachers can use the given information as a resource but modify it in a way that is well suited for his or her students. I do however think that teachers need to be careful what information they get from the internet. teachers should follow the lesson format they have been presented first-hand.
